How does a cow produce milk?
Cows are ruminants, which means they are a cud-chewing mammal with a unique digestive system. True ruminants, such as cattle, sheep, goats, deer, and antelope, have one stomach with four compartments: the rumen, reticulum, omasum, and abomasums. This complex system lets it generate energy more efficiently from the consumption of fibrous plants.
Ruminants use their mouth (oral cavity) and tongue to harvest forages during grazing by wrapping their tongues around plants and then pulling to tear the forage which they then eat.
